Picture sudoku
Picture sudoku is a sudoku made for children: the grid is filled with animals, fruit or colours, as well as numbers. No picture can appear twice in its row or column, or in its box when there is one. Tap a square and then a picture, or drag the picture into place.
What children practise
- Logical reasoning: ruling out what is already in the row, column and box.
- Visual discrimination of pictures and colours in a grid.
- Spatial awareness: telling rows, columns and boxes apart.
- Sustained attention to check the board before placing a picture.
- Strategy: looking first for the square where only one picture fits.
Levels and settings
Level 1
3 × 3 with 1 or 2 gaps: just look at the row and the column.
Level 2
3 × 3 with 3 to 5 gaps.
Level 3
4 × 4 with 2 × 2 boxes and 4 to 6 gaps.
Level 4
4 × 4, almost empty, with 8 to 10 gaps.
Level 5
6 × 6 with 2 × 3 boxes and 14 to 18 gaps.
Auto
Starts at level 1 and goes up a level every 2 boards.
How to play it in class
- Open Picture sudoku and pick a level or let the year group set it. Choose animals, fruit, colours or numbers.
- In team mode, both teams solve the same board, each on its own half. One child can also play alone.
- Tap an empty square and then a picture, or drag the picture onto the square.
- If it clashes, the repeated picture lights up red and the game says whether it is in the row, the column or the box.
- Each finished board is a point. The first to 3, 5 or 8 wins.

The screen splits in two and each team plays on its own half at the same time.
For one player
One child plays on the whole screen at their own pace: on the whiteboard, a computer or a tablet.

Yes. In the settings you choose animals, fruit, colours or numbers, so it works for younger and older children alike.
Which level suits Early years?
Level 1: a 3 × 3 grid with only 1 or 2 gaps. The voice reads out the instructions, so no reading is needed.
Could a board be completed in two different ways?
No. Every board has a single solution, and both teams get the same boards.
