Hundreds, tens and ones

An educational place value game for the interactive whiteboard. Each half of the screen shows the same number built from base 10 blocks: blue hundred flats, green ten rods and red unit cubes, each kind in its own tray. Teams count them and tap, out of four basketballs, the one with the right number.

What children practise

Levels and settings

Y1

Numbers from 5 to 20, with ten rods and loose cubes.

Y2-Y3

Two-digit numbers, from 11 to 99.

Y4-Y6

Three-digit numbers, from 101 to 999, with hundred flats.

Hard, from Y3

The challenge changes: say how many tens the number has.

Easy, Medium or Hard

Sets how many correct answers win the game: 5, 8 or 12.

How to play it in class

  1. Open the game and choose the year group and difficulty: the size of the numbers adjusts itself.
  2. Type the two team names, or choose to play solo.
  3. The same number appears on both halves. Each team counts its blocks and taps the ball it thinks is right.
  4. The first correct answer scores a basket and new blocks appear. After a wrong answer, the game reminds them what each block is worth and they can try again.
  5. The first team to reach the target number of correct answers wins.

Ways to play

In teams, at the same time

The screen splits in two and each team plays on its own half at the same time.

For one player

One child plays on the whole screen at their own pace: on the whiteboard, a computer or a tablet.

Frequently asked questions

Which numbers come up in each year group?

In Y1, 5 to 20; in Y2 and Y3, 11 to 99; and from Y4 to Y6, 101 to 999. You can also set the limit yourself in the settings.

What is the tens challenge?

It asks how many tens the number has in total, including those inside the hundreds: 345 has 34. It appears on Hard from Y3, or when you choose it in the settings.

Why are the answers so similar?

When counting, the wrong options differ from the right number by one, ten or a hundred, such as 245 or 355 instead of 345.

Is it free?

You can play 5 free games without signing up. After that, a one-off payment of €9.99 unlocks all 78 games for ever, on all your devices. There is no subscription.
